The way that mental health care for older people is developing in the UK is being shaped by a number of factors. These include demographic shifts, changes in the general populations attitudes to health, alterations in professional practice, governmental policy, and medical and technological advances. This article summarises some key aspects of these changes and predicts the likely direction of growth of mental health services in response.
